This book contains a commentary on a short meditation practice written by the current Dalai Lama to develop a compassionate mindset. On the one hand, Lama Yeshe uses many examples from everyday life to show how we restrict ourselves through our limited images of ourselves and our abilities. On the other hand, he describes in great detail the visualizations and sound meditations through which we bring to life the Buddha of compassion - which is potentially present in all living beings.
Book review:
"Lama Thubten Yeshe, who had received his training at Sera Monastery, devoted most of his short life - he died in 1984 at the age of 49 - to teaching Western students. Starting from the monastery he established in Kopan, Nepal, thousands were drawn to his courses there or to the other 120 centers his students have established around the world under the umbrella of the FPMT (Federation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition). This book is based on a transcript of oral teachings that Lama Yeshe gave as one of the first introductions to the Tantric teachings for Western students at the Chenrezig Institute in Australia. It is a commentary to a short meditation practice on the meditation deity Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, written by His Holiness the Dalai Lama when he was 19 years old. In this guruyoga practice, the visualized Buddha takes on the appearance of his own lama in his ordinary form - in this case, the Dalai Lama himself. Meditation on this deity serves in particular to develop a compassionate attitude of mind. As an introduction to the basics of this practice, the Lama explains the different approaches in the sutra and tantra vehicle, the philosophy of emptiness and the dependence of the world on the subject's point of view. Building on this, he gives a brief commentary on the individual verses of the basic text and explains how this practice can be incorporated into every minute of life. This reveals the sophisticated psychology of Tantra with its wonderful and effective methods that bring the practitioner into contact with their potential for clarity, joy and compassion. Lama Yeshe describes how we constrict ourselves through our limited images of ourselves and explains meditations that help awaken the deepest potential for Buddhahood inherent in every being. In these explanations - as in all of the author's works - his particularly forceful, unconventional style is evident. The reader senses that it was not enough for him to present these teachings, but that he made a heartfelt effort to address each individual student personally. He liked to use vivid examples from everyday life to bring the philosophy of Tantra to life as a practical opportunity for personal practice, without diluting the teachings. In the translation of the teachings into German, it becomes clear that Lama Yeshe taught directly in broken English and that close contact with the students was obviously more important to him than a sophisticated language. However, those who are interested in the essence of the practice will find in this work a concrete and tangible introduction to the basic practices of the often mystified Tantra, which is very suitable for gaining an initial feeling for the inner nature of this extraordinary spiritual path."
