Tenzin Gyatso, the XIV Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetans, was born in Amdo (Tibet) in 1935 and has lived in exile in India since 1959. The XIV Dalai Lama is held in the highest esteem worldwide. His commitment to non-violence was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
